The FSSAI ( Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is an essential regulatory body that ensures the food safety standard across the Country. Any food-related business whether they are manufacturers, packing, processing or distributors are mandatory to obtain FSSAI Certificate. However, many of us are confused between the FSSAI registration and FSSAI License. In this blog we can make a difference between the FSSAI Registration and License by knowing these meanings, compliances and penalties.
A FSSAI registration is a basic form of certification for small-scale food business operators (FBOs). This registration applies to businesses with a small turnover and a restricted area of operation. Small food businesses can achieve FSSAI Registration by complying with food safety standards at an entry-level.
In contrast to the registration, the FSSAI license is mandatory for larger food businesses. Depending on the size and scope of the business, it is further classified into State Licenses and Central Licenses. FSSAI Licenses are essential for mid-to-large-scale businesses, including those involved in manufacturing, processing, storing, distributing, and selling food.
There are three types of Fssai registration, which are based on the annual Turnover and food production of the business, which are given below:-
FSSAI Basic Registration: Basic FSSAI Registration is mandatory for All Food Business Operators (FBOs) whose annual Turnover is below ₹12 lakh. This is mainly for hawkers, petty retailers, temporary stall holders, roaming vendors, and tiny food operators.
FSSAI State License:- This is mandatory for the food business whose annual Turnover is above ₹12 lakh but below ₹20 crore. Turnover is the same for a State manufacturing license, or State Trading License.
FSSAI Central License:- All food business operators whose annual Turnover is above ₹ 20 crore must apply for the central FSSAI registration. In some instances, irrespective of the turnover, Central FSSAI is mandatory e.g. E-Commerce operators, Import food items, airport shops, etc. The central government issues this Fssai license.
