What is an FSSAI License Certification?

Types of FSSAI Registration

There are three types of FSSAI registration, which are based on the annual turnover and food production of the business, which are given below:

  1. Basic FSSAI Registration: Basic FSSAI Registration is mandatory for all Food Business Operators (FBOs) whose annual turnover is below ₹12 lakh. This is mainly for hawkers, petty retailers, temporary stall holders, roaming vendors, and tiny food operators.
  2. State FSSAI Registration License: This is mandatory for the food business whose annual turnover is above ₹12 lakh but below ₹20 crore. The turnover is the same for a State manufacturing license or State Trading License. This license is valid for up to 5 yea₹
  3. Central FSSAI Registration License: All food business operators whose annual turnover is above ₹ 20 crore must apply for the central FSSAI registration. In some instances, irrespective of the turnover, Central FSSAI is mandatory e.g., e-commerce operators, import food items, airport shops, etc. The central government issues this FSSAI license, which is valid for up to 5 years.

FSSAI License for Restaurants

  • Blueprint/layout plan of the processing unit showing the dimensions in meters/square meters and operation-wise area allocation
  • Name and list of equipment and machinery along with the number, installed capacity, and horsepower used
  • Production unit photographs

  • Analysis report (Chemical & Bacteriological) of water to be used as an ingredient in food from a recognized/public health laboratory to confirm the portability indicating the name of an authorized representative of the Lab who collected the sample and the date of collecting the sample.   • Milk Business - Source or procurement plan for milk
  • Meat Business - Source of raw material
  • Undertaking from FBO on letterhead (Only for Proprietary Foods)
  • Radiation Processing of Food - License obtained from Dept of Atomic Energy, Self-declaration to comply with the conditions for approval, operation, license, and process control prescribed under the Atomic Energy Rules, 2012
  • 100% Export Oriented Units - Ministry of Commerce Certificate for 100% EOU

Process of FSSAI Registration Online

The FSSAI Registration process in India is completely online. An FSSAI license application or registration is carried out by the submission of necessary documents, which requires food business operators to fit into eligibility criteria. These criteria determine whether they need to apply for registration or a license, and if a license, then whether State or Central. The following is the process of FSSAI registration:

  • Step 1: Fill out the Online Application

    Necessary documents are arranged and submitted online on the FoSCoS portal. Upon submission of an application, a Unique code is generated. Application status can be tracked using the code.

  • Step 2: Inspection by FSSAI

    After the submission of the application, the FSSAI authority will verify it. In most cases, an inspection will be performed by the food safety officer on the premises.

  • Step 3: Approval from FSSAI

    After the inspection and document verification, approval will be issued by the food safety officer to the respective FSSAI licensing or registration authority for the certificate issuance.

  • Step 4: Issuance of FSSAI License

    Once the application is approved, the FSSAI license will be issued within 25-30 days. Additionally, the FSSAI will give a 14-digit license number with its logo in your mentioned email ID, which you can display on your food products and premises. If there is no revert from the department within 60 days of the application, the license will be automatically issued.
