How to Check PF Balance? - With or Without UAN

PF is an essential saving scheme specially designed to provide financial security to the employee who contributed to it. Employed Provident Funds managed by the EPFO department whose work to track the contributions. This contribution is done by the employer and employee both therefore having a better understanding over this subject is must. In most of the cases, many companies deduct the PF from the employee’s salary but not deposit it to EPFO, therefore every employee must check their PF balance regularly. What is PF?

PF stands for “Provident Funds” is a retirement saving scheme where both the employer and employee contribute. This scheme is governed by the EPFO which stands for Employees’ Provident Fund Organization that is a government social security agency whose main role is to manage provident funds in India. The PF account gets interest and withdrawn under the specific conditions. EPF is mainly for salaried employees but the PPF (Public Provident Fund) is open for all. Methods to Check PF Balance

The PF account holder has a question: can they check PF balance both with and without UAN? So, Yes! PF account holder can check PF Balance via several methods: 

  1. Checking PF Balance with UAN

    • Via EPFO Portal 

    • Step 1: Visit the EPFO official portal - https://www.epfindia.gov.in

      Step 2: Click on the “For Employees” which you will find under the “Service Tab”. 

      Step 3: Click on “Member Passbook” . 

      Step 4: Enter your UAN which stands for Universal Account Number and then enter the password. 

      Step 5: After putting the password, your pf balance and transaction details will be displayed. 

    • Using UMANG App 

    • Step 1: Firstly, you need to download the “UMANG App” from the Google play store or Apple App Store depending on your preference. 

      Step 2: When you open the app you will see “EPFO Service” select it. 

      Step 3: Then Choose “View Passbook” 

      Step 4: After clicking on “View Passbook” enter the UAN and OTP which are sent to the registered mobile number. 

      Step 5: Then you are able to view your PF Balance. 

    • Via SMS 

    • Step 1: Send an SMS on 7738299899 in the format of “EPFOHO UAN”.

      Note: If you would like to receive SMS in any other language than English, you will need to add the first three characters of the language after UAN.

      For example, to receive an SMS in Punjabi then the SMS to be sent will be “EPFOHO UAN PUN” to 7738299899. 

      Step 2: The Account holder will receive an SMS with their latest PF Balance. 

    • Via Missed Call 

    • Step 1: Connect on 9966044425 from the registered mobile number. 

      Step 2: It will be an auto connected call, and will be disconnected automatically. 

      Step 3: After just this call, the account holder will receive an SMS containing the PF Balance.

    • Via EPFO Whatsapp Service

    • Connect on whatsapp helpline number provided by the EPFO (It may vary on different regional offices). 

      Get the contact number of your region on EPFO official portal. 

      Send a message requesting the PF balance and you will receive a response.

  3. Many employees don’t have UAN, still they can check their PF Balance by using below-mentioned methods:

    • Via Employer

    • The employee mainly get their PF details in monthly payslip. They can also request to their company HR or finance team for updating their balance statement. 

    • Via EPFO Office Helpdesk

    • The PF account holder can visit the nearby EPFO office and by providing their details such as PF account number, PAN, Aadhar or registered mobile number, the account holder will be able to check their PF balance. 

    • Connecting with EPFO Customer Care 

    • The account holder can connect on the EPFO toll-free helpline on 1800-118-005 and provide PF account details and the department will assist you with checking the balance.
