Why the Rumour Gained Traction

There are two main reasons that helps to float these rumour

  1. There is often confusion between MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) and GST (Goods and Service Tax) during UPI transactions. But currently this is free of any charges for users. MDR is free of charge to merchants by the payment service providers such as banks or apps for processing transactions. However, most of the time, some people misinterpreted this exemption and assumed that introducing GST on UPI could be the next step, especially for high-valued payment or transactions.

  2. Due to the growing digital payment system, many professionals and business owners are using the UPI system for transactions. It includes payments for services, personal funds transactions or vendor purchases. A rumor targeting this threshold naturally raised concern among a large segment of UPI or digital payment users.
